Thought long and hard about a mandolin slicer and looked at fancy ones with stands etc. This simple OXO one has been great. It does the basic task of slicing and works well on anything like a potato, carrots and celery that have a bit of firmness to them. It starts to struggle with softer things like tomatoes and mushroom but still works. As long as you don't expect it to do all of your kitchen slicing, it is a great utensil to have. I like the Dauphinoise potato dish and it's great for this. To work, it has to be surgically sharp so extreme care is needed when using it! Keep it away from kids! OXO provide a safety holder to secure the veg in question which I use when getting too close to the blade for comfort! It has three width settings and a closed safety setting but would benefit from a custom made container in which to store it away in so you could be confident that you didn't catch your fingers on it when getting it out of the drawer. A good purchase, which we use a lot.

Bought as a gift for my son who loves to cook. 'Please be careful as it is very sharp' said the Mother - 'No worries worrier!!' said the son.The same night I get a phone call - sliced off some of my finger!! He loves it and is NOW very careful!!!!

Excellent product and VERY sharp! First time I used (without food holder) it took the tip off my finger! So beware! I now cut carrots, courgettes etc part way down then use the holder. The reason I only give four stars is the food holder is very difficult to secure to harder vegetables and fruit. Easy to wash and with three thickness settings is good for stir fry or salads. I like the fact you can rest it on a bowl or saucepan so the slices go where you want them! Recommended.

I bought this primarily to make sweet potato crisps and it's great. Requires vey little effort if used properly. Excellent and quick on cucumbers, peppers, onions, tomatoes etc. for sandwich fillings. It's adjustable for 3 thicknesses however I tend to prefer the thickest setting for most uses, even the sweet potato crisps which will thin out when dried and cooked in the oven.

This is brilliant! Never thought of buying one before as I trusted my knife skills. Well, this thing cuts more accurately, quicker and cleaner than I can - end of! It is incredibly sharp and there's a risk that you get carried away and slice the end of your finger off so use the holder tool as soon as the item gets anywhere near your fingers. There's a useful safety positing which means you can wash iy and store it with the blade tucked away. I'm still a bit wary of it as it's basically a large razor blade on a frame. Would recommend to anyone.

This item is brilliantly useful! First - warnings: You must be careful and have time to work methodically without rushing, as the knife piece is extremely sharp. Also when I wash it I dry and put it away without delay. Never leave it lying around unless the slicing gap is closed, to avoid anyone touching the knife accidentally.Now to the OXO mandoline - with this excellently made essential equipment, you have a pile of even slices of cucumber for salads, of potatoes for crips/pushing in around a roasting chicken/potatoes lyonaise, fine slivers of onions to add to dishes, thin or thick slices of courgettes or carrots for soups, all in a matter of seconds. Easy to clean, to store, and to use. What's not to love?

This mandoline arrived today so I used it tonight to chop an onion for making a sauce. When we ate our meal I found a piece of plastic and spat it out. My husband then found a long spike of plastic (see pictures) and then anotherand another. It seems that when slicing the onion I had inadvertently slipped over the blade and somehow sliced the side of the veg holder as well as my onion. See picture of veg holder. The plastic on the veg holder needs to be blade proof and there should be a warning on the instructions. This should not happen and right now we are just hoping we didn't accidentally swallow any other pieces of plastic. Will return for refund.

Did manage to cut myself, didn't hurt as it's so sharp! Makes slicing for Dauphinoise potatoes so super quick and even thickness. really happy with it. not sure how to sharpen the blade when it blunts but it's razor sharp as it comes so definitely use the included plastic holder.

Brilliant and simple gadget. Mandolins always frightened me as I expected to spend the afternoon in A&E. If you use this as directed you will find it hard to end up there. It works well but would struggle to cope with a large Maris Piper to slice as the cutting area is only 7.5cms. wide without a bit of trimming. Other than that it's a great bit of kit to have in the drawer. You won't use it every day but when you need it, you need it! Good price and quality too.

The whole family finds this a doddle to use for slicing veg in different thickness and it's easy to clean and feel much safer than a standard slicer.However, ours broke just after 12 months - the clear plastic backplate just cracked near the pivot point. I would say the material is not thick or strong enough.Disappointing given the cost of it - especially since the cutting blade is still sharp as ever and would have probably given at least another 1-2 years service.
